Writing Name

Hello Parents!

It is important this summer that you work with your child on writing and recognizing their own name. Student's who are able to work a pencil, use scissors, and write their own name have a huge advantage when starting out the school year.

Take 10 minutes everyday to work with your child on their name.

Tips For Reading Difficult Words

Stuck on a word when reading? Here are a few tips we use in the classroom to help you read on. Always remember: Never let the word win! Read on!

Eagle Eye - Look at the pictures!

Lips the Fish - Get your lips ready!
  • Say the first few sounds on the new word.
  • Read to the end of the sentence and say it again.
Stretchy Snake - Stretch it out!
  • Stretch the word out slowly.
  • Put the sounds together.
Chunky Monkey - Chunk the word!
  • Look for a chunk that you know (-at, -an)
  • Look for a word part (-ing, -er)
Skippy Frog - Skip It, Skip It!
  • Skip the word.
  • Read to the end of the sentence.
  • Hop back and READ IT, READ IT!
Tryin' Lion - Try it Again!
  • Try to reread the sentence.
  • Try a word that makes sense.
Helpful Kangaroo - Ask for help!
  • Ask for help (After you have tried all of the other strategies).

Sitting in the Classroom

Hello Parents!

As September approaches take some time to practise with your child the right way to sit in the classroom. Most teachers call this the 5 Point Check. It is:

1. Legs crossed

2. Hands in your lap

3. Eyes looking at the teacher

4. Ears listening

5. Mouth closed, but hopefully smiling

Using the Washroom

By Kindergarten your child should be able to use the washroom independently. They should also remember to always wash their hands when finished. Students needs to be able to use toilet paper to clean themselves.

Getting Dressed

Students entering into Kindergarten must be able to dress themselves. Students should be able to:

1. Put on their own coat.

       2. Do up their own zipper.

3. Put on their own shoes.
Shoes must be Velcro! NO LACES PLEASE.

4. Put on their own snowpants (Snowpants worn on very cold days only).

5. Place items in their backpack and zip it up.
Backpacks should be large enough to carry homework folder, lunch bag, and 2 snacks.

Check out the video below for an easy way to put on your coat:
